Practiced Patience

Some Landscapes Are Designed To Impress Overnight. This Residence Was Designed To Grow Into Its Story... Carefully, Naturally, And With Quiet Confidence.

This Pleasant Grove Utah residence is a rare example of patience as a design principle.

From the very beginning, the client’s vision was rooted in restraint: plant material selected for year-round color, placed with room to breathe, and cultivated to mature gracefully—not forced. It’s a garden that rewards the long view. This is a place where hedges are trained, where layers unfold with each season, and where every space in the landscape has its own purpose, its own character, and its own rhythm.

Layers of luxury & intention.

Each part of the property became its own distinct “room”, a hot tub for relaxing, a pool for play, a firepit for connection, and, tucked away where the sport court was once meant to be, a secret garden filled with purpose and joy. The greenhouse, a personal project of the homeowner, became a daily ritual space where she propagates new flowers and tends to the plants she’s lovingly added around the space. In a small way, we all help bring her vision to life.

The site itself presented its share of challenges. Dry Utah summers and shifting city irrigation regulations kept us on our toes. Grubs and pests appeared uninvited. And the steep grade of the back lot called for some creative thinking. Elevated decks, layered stairs, and flowing pathways that soften the descent… These challenges weren’t obstacles, they were invitations to be precise and masterful with design.

Patience isn’t passive.

Early in the project, we emphasized education—explaining not only what we were doing, but why. That built trust. We worked closely with the homeowners, educating where needed and adjusting where necessary. Every choice, from irrigation cycles to rose pruning, was made in collaboration and guided by trust built over time. Now, we’re able to move swiftly when challenges arise, with a shared understanding and mutual respect for the process.

Today, the garden feels effortless. But make no mistake, this is a living system managed with weekly intention. Lighting highlights focal trees, pops of color frame every view, and thoughtful contrasts, like the formal boxwood hedge against soft lavender, create a balance that’s both structured and free-spirited.

Built for beauty, trained over time.

This isn’t just a maintained garden. It is a carefully cultivated landscape. One that reflects the people who live here: deliberate, gracious, and beautifully rooted in the long view. We’ve walked alongside this project from design to build, and still today through careful, ongoing maintenance. It’s a collaboration built on trust, knowledge-sharing, and a shared love of watching things grow the right way.
