Riverside Retreat

In The Heart of Provo Utah, Bordered By a Whispering River And Shadowed By Spruce Trees, Lies a Property Built On Memories.

This residence is more than a home. It’s a living tribute to family legacy, curated for connection and designed
to feel like a mountain cabin retreat, despite being tucked discreetly within the city’s seams.

When the homeowner purchased his parents’ home, he didn’t want to start over—he wanted to build forward. He envisioned a landscape that would honor the past, embrace the present, and welcome a lively future filled with grandchildren, stories, fishing and summer evenings by the water. His request was beautifully simple, and deeply complex: preserve the spirit of his childhood while creating a secluded, year-round oasis for generations to come.

Designing with memory in mind.

This residence is a masterclass in honoring legacy through landscape. We began with the site’s most sacred anchors—two 65 years old towering spruce trees planted when the homeowner was a boy. Everything flowed from there: the curves of the driveway, the rhythms of the blooming beds, and the soft, ornamental plant palette that now sweeps across the long, narrow lot like the river itself. Native plantings, ornamental grasses, and regionally sourced perennials were layered to evoke a mountain experience just steps from the back door.

With nearly 1,000 feet of property to design and a mature canopy to protect, we let nature lead. Beds were sculpted to mirror the water’s natural movement. A winding driveway arcs beside the river, never rushing, always revealing. The preserved stone from the original family home now lines the walkways, grounding the future in the textures of the past.

Nature intentionally framed.

Rather than impose structure, we curated flow—pathways that reveal, gathering spaces that feel discovered, and a planting palette that subtly evolves with the seasons. Every path leads to a place with purpose: a shaded nook for grandparents to watch the grandkids at play, a quiet patio framed by butterfly bush overlooking the water, a private garden retreat just off the master suite. This property doesn’t shout—it whispers grace and serenity.

The planting design celebrates seasonal change with layered beds of perennials, ornamental grasses, and regionally sourced material. A Japanese maple, sourced from out of state, punctuates the garden with a crimson note in all the right months. Groundcovers knit the spaces together, while evergreens frame private areas without sacrificing views to the river.

A living legacy.

Despite its central location, this landscape does what the client asked: it feels like stepping out into the mountains. Every design decision—whether honoring a legacy tree, protecting native soil, or softening the edge of a utility corner—was made to serve that vision.
Today, it’s a home that remembers. A refuge. A river-wrapped retreat where every generation has space to gather, and where the trees still whisper the stories that built it.
